24/ Global influence map, black carbon in Greenland, using Deck.gl
Visual journalism tools and insights from January..
Welcome to the 24th issue of Nuanced,
I’m currently looking to collaborate with journalists and creators! Reach out if you need visuals, maps or charts for your stories and investigations.
Let’s dive in.
Buried Signals #2
The green energy transition is reshaping our world - but at what cost? As melting ice opens up shipping routes and geopolitical tensions demand new supply lines, the minerals needed for renewable energy are turning this island into the next frontier for industrial development.
But there's a dark irony: Arctic shipping traffic has doubled since 2010 and black carbon emissions have surged 85%. The ships carrying these "green" resources are accelerating Arctic ice melt through black carbon emissions, threatening local communities and ecosystems.

Inspiration
My favourite visual project this month is Brody Smith’s Global Influence Index, a powerful and slick 3D data-dashboard plotting the global influence of China and the US across multiple visuals.
Decoded
I’ll explain the methodologies behind some of my visuals and investigations in the Decoded playlist of my Youtube channel, these are intended to be short, technical and informative. This video is about using Deck.gl to render 170,000 points on a real-time map.
Useful tools
These are the tools I’ve been using over the past month:
Deck.gl for GPU data rendering
Jason Boone’s Youtube channel for mapping animation
Figma2HTML by the DataFace (thanks!)
Thanks for reading!
